Physiatry
What are physiatrists? Physiatrists are medical doctors who diagnose physical illnesses
and prescribe therapeutic treatment. People with the following conditions may benefit
from a physiatry evaluation:
- Stroke
- Amputation
- Neuromuscular diseases
- Arthritis
- Brain trauma or injury
- Musculoskeletal trauma and disorders
- Back or neck injury
- Nerve injury
- Chronic pain
There are three basic tools a physiatrist will use to diagnose a patient:
- Physical examination
- EMG, or electromyography
- NCV, or nerve conduction velocity test
In an EMG or NCV, needle electrodes are inserted into the muscle and a tiny electrical
current is applied. A reading indicates whether the muscles and nerves are working
properly.
Saint Peter's offers physiatry examinations, EMGs and NCVs for outpatients on Mondays
and Thursdays, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. If your physician has recommended
an EMG or NCV, call
(732) 745-8570.
