Women's Surgery
Surgeons at Saint Peter's University Hospital use the latest advances and technology
to perform surgery on women of all ages who suffer from a variety of conditions.
Breast Cancer Procedures
Breast cancer patients can opt to have a number of surgical procedures, depending
on the size and stage of the disease. These include:
- Lumpectomy, a breast-conserving technique that removes only the tumor from the breast.
Following lumpectomy, external or internal radiation therapy may be recommended.
- Total mastectomy, in which the entire breast and the sentinel lymph node (first
node in the armpit) are removed.
- Modified radical mastectomy, in which the breast and two lymph nodes in the underarm
are removed.
Reconstructive Surgery
Patients who opt for a total or modified mastectomy may have reconstructive surgery
performed either at the time of their cancer surgery or afterward. Plastic surgeons can
offer synthetic breast implants or a variety of procedures that use the patient's
own tissue.
