Women's Surgery
Surgeons at Saint Peter's University Hospital use the latest advances and technology
to perform surgery on women of all ages who suffer from a variety of conditions.
Breast Cancer
Our breast cancer surgeons specialize in lumpectomies, “total” mastectomies and
modified radical mastectomies. A lumpectomy is a breast-conserving technique that
removes only the tumor from the breast. The remaining breast tissue is treated by
radiation therapy.
If our surgeons must perform a "total" mastectomy, the entire breast and axillary
lymph nodes are removed. A modified radical mastectomy procedure removes the breast
as well as two levels of the axillary lymph nodes in the underarm area.
Saint Peter's provides breast cancer patients with breast reconstruction procedures.
A plastic surgeon outlines the options with each patient and makes recommendations,
including reconstruction with a synthetic breast implant or using a patient's own
tissue.
Female Incontinence and Prolapse
Saint Peter's also offers surgical (and nonsurgical) solutions to women with urinary
and fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and other dysfunctions of the reproductive
and urinary tracts.
Orthopedic
Saint Peter's orthopedic surgeons perform hip resurfacing for women ages 60 or younger
who do not have osteoporosis or certain kinds of severe arthritis and who lead active
lifestyles. This innovative procedure is an alternative to total hip replacement
for adults with severe arthritis, dysplasia and other hip diseases.
We also offer the Zimmer
® Gender Solutions™ Knee (Gender Knee), one of
the knee implants shaped to fit a woman's anatomy, and Minimally Invasive Solutions™
(MIS) Quad-Sparing™ total-knee arthroplasty.
